| Environmental Pegler’s International Environmental Standards
Pegler is a renowned manufacturer of quality brassware and was one of the first companies in their industry to achieve the international standard for environmental management EN ISO 14001.
In 1999 Pegler launched a project to implement an Environmental Management System (EMS) at their Doncaster site. This involved creating a set of policies, procedures, measures and directives designed to minimize the impact Pegler could have on the environment, and drive continuous environmental performance improvements.
A complete audit of the business was taken to establish where risk existed that could have an impact on the environment. Some examples audited were: furnace emissions, effluent discharges, waste management, noise, odours and the use of natural resources such as gas and indirectly, electricity. In addition products and the introduction of new products were audited to ensure environmental control was to be maintained.
Following the design of the control procedures an extensive training program was implemented to train employees on how to ensure the site processes were kept under control, including emergency response training.
Upon completion and after internal audits verified that the system delivered the desired requirements and was functioning correctly, Pegler applied to have the EMS externally audited by a UKAS accredited body. SGS Yarsley performed this function and concluded at the end of the two-day audit that the system was compliant to the international standard EN ISO 14001 and recommended Pegler for certification.
Pegler’s Environmental Management System was then certified in June 2001. Capital Investment in Waste Management
In 2004 Pegler invested in a new state of the art effluent treatment plant replacing the labour intensive process used to treat the discharge waters from its plating processes. Being located in a residential area and discharging treated effluent to the local water treatment works, as well as being close to a nature reserve of special scientific interest, were all contributory factors in the company's decision to invest significantly in protecting the environment.
The company also recognised its responsibility not to pollute the atmosphere and invested in a Micropul dust extraction system to remove particles of foundry dust from the atmosphere and also a cyclone extraction system used to extract mop debris generate by the company's manual and automatic polishing processes.
Over the next 3 years the company also has plans to invest in a number of filtration units specifically designed to reduce the amount of oil mist entering the atmosphere improving the environment yet again for workers and local residents alike.
Pegler’s Environmental Policy
Pegler manufactures plumbing brassware on a 21-acre site, based on the outskirts of Doncaster.
The Board of Directors recognise that concern for the environment should be an integral and fundamental part of the Company's corporate business strategy.
Pegler’s objective is, therefore, to achieve the manufacture and distribution of products to customers, in a manner that is responsible to the environment and in accordance with the appropriate legislation and codes of practice.
As part of Pegler’s proactive approach to the environment, we will maintain an Environmental Management System (EMS). This system will involve all employees within the company, and will provide the mechanism to manage and control aspects of the business that could impact on the environment.
The system will focus on preventing pollution by:
- Minimising and controlling emissions to air, land and water.
- Managing, and where possible, reducing the consumption of non renewable resources.
- Controlling and reducing the production of waste.
- Ensuring that awareness on global and company environmental issues is communicated to all employees through training and awareness programs. Within the framework of the company’s EMS, an annual review will be scheduled to review environmental initiatives, and set performance objectives for the coming year.
The Board believes that this approach will enforce an understanding and awareness of these issues within the management team, so that appropriate consideration and resourcing can be applied to environmental issues. This will provide the framework to continuously improve environmental performance whilst achieving our commercial and operational objectives. |
